Finding confidence, one step at a time: Monika’s Story

This International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating Monika’s journey, a story of growth, courage, and the quiet confidence that comes from taking one step at a time.

Sometimes the most powerful journeys aren’t planned.

They begin quietly, with a small opportunity, a willingness to help, and the courage to try something new.

That’s how Monika’s story with New Forest Shortbread began.

“I started as a part-time housekeeper,” she says. “On my second day, I was asked to help pack shortbread.”

Not long after, she began baking.

“I’ve always loved baking at home… but I never imagined it would become my full-time job.”

Now, it’s not just her work, it’s something she takes real pride in.

Balancing work and life

One of Monika’s biggest challenges wasn’t in the bakery, it was at home.

During the busy summer season, when the business needed her most, her son was off school for six weeks.

Childcare was expensive. The pressure was real.

“It was a really difficult time.”

But what stands out isn’t just the challenge, it’s how she came through it.

“Tracy supported me and helped me through.”

And more importantly, what she learned:

“It taught me how important it is to speak openly… it’s easier when you don’t carry things alone.”

Growth you can feel

Ask Monika what she’s most proud of, and her answer is simple, but powerful.

“How far I’ve come.”

From starting something completely new, to building skills step by step, to finding confidence in her work.

“I’m doing something I truly enjoy.”

And alongside that, something even more important: Balancing work and motherhood.

“It hasn’t always been easy. But I’ve done it.”

Doing things properly

For Monika, quality is about consistency and care.

“Paying attention to detail. Not cutting corners.”

It’s about:

  • Speaking up when something isn’t right
  • Fixing problems early
  • Working together

Because when things are done properly from the start, everything else follows.

“And the final product is something we can all be proud of.”

Creating something that feels like home

When people taste New Forest Shortbread, Monika hopes they feel something simple and genuine.

“Warmth. Comfort. A little bit of joy.”

Not mass-produced. Not rushed. But, handmade, full of flavour and made with care.

“I want people to feel welcomed… like they’re enjoying something homemade and honest.”

The part you don’t see

Behind the scenes, there’s something customers might never notice.

“It feels like a family.” There’s laughter. Support. A sense of togetherness.

“That atmosphere is a big part of what makes our shortbread special.”

Even if it’s invisible, it’s there in every bite.

A quiet kind of strength

Monika’s advice to other women is grounded and real.

“Trust yourself… even if you’re stepping into something new.”

You don’t need to have everything figured out.

“You don’t have to be perfect to begin. You just have to begin.”

And perhaps most importantly:

“Don’t be afraid to ask for help.”

Because strength isn’t about doing everything alone. It’s about growing, learning, and allowing others to support you along the way.
